Abstract:

This research paper examines the educational status and the resulting social change among Gond tribal women in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. As one of the largest tribal communities in central India, the Gonds have a long history of cultural richness and social continuity, yet their educational development has lagged due to socio-economic marginalisation, geographic isolation, linguistic barriers, and traditional gender roles. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, analysing both quantitative data such as literacy rates, enrolment trends, and dropout patterns, along with qualitative insights obtained from interviews and field reports. The findings reveal that although recent government interventions, self-help groups, and community awareness programmes have significantly improved educational access, Gond women continue to face structural constraints. Education has nevertheless contributed to noticeable social transformation, including higher levels of health awareness, economic participation, mobility, decision-making, and reduced gender-based discrimination. The paper concludes that education remains the most effective tool for empowering Gond women, but sustained policy attention and community involvement are essential to achieving long-term progress.
