Abstract:

This project presents a voltage-adaptive control strategy for a three-phase, two-stage, grid-connected Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) system aimed at maximizing energy extraction and enhancing system efficiency. The proposed system features a boost converter as the first stage to perform Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), and a two-level Voltage Source Converter (VSC) as the second stage for grid interfacing. A novel adaptive DC link voltage mechanism is introduced, adjusting the reference voltage based on variations in the Common Point of Interconnection (CPI) voltage, thereby minimizing switching losses and improving dynamic performance. Additionally, a feedforward power smoothing component enhances transient response to insolation and grid voltage changes. The system is tested under varied grid conditions, demonstrating robustness during under-voltage and over-voltage scenarios commonly found at the far radial ends of the Indian grid. Simulation results confirm that the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of grid current remains within IEEE-519 standards. The approach not only reduces power losses but also prevents frequent converter trips, increasing energy yield without requiring additional hardware upgrades.
