Abstract:

Sensor reduction is a crucial design consideration in synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM)–based electric vehicle (EV) drives, as it enhances system reliability and reduces overall cost. However, achieving smooth and efficient performance across a wide speed range through sensorless control remains a significant challenge. This study proposes an adaptive flux estimator–based speed sensorless control scheme for a SynRM drive that ensures robust and reliable operation under varying speed conditions. The adaptive speed and position estimation mechanism effectively mitigates sluggish dynamic response during both low- and high-speed operation when compared to conventional stator flux linkage–based estimation methods. The proposed adaptive flux–based (AFB) algorithm maintains orthogonality between the estimated flux linkage and back electromotive force (EMF), thereby improving the accuracy of both speed and rotor position estimation. Additionally, the system integrates a solar-assisted charging configuration that supplements the main battery supply. This hybrid arrangement enhances overall energy efficiency, prolongs battery life, and ensures sustainable operation of the EV drive. The combination of adaptive flux estimation and solar energy utilization provides a reliable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient solution for modern electric vehicle propulsion systems.
