Abstract:

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more prevalent, reducing charging time while enhancing system flexibility has become a key focus in charging infrastructure design. This paper presents a simultaneous AC and DC charging scheme that allows electric vehicles to draw power from both the grid and a secondary DC source—such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage (BES), or vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) sources—through a unified system architecture. The proposed design integrates a Type-1 onboard AC charger with a bidirectional DC/DC converter, enabling concurrent energy delivery from both ports without interrupting the conventional AC charging process. The AC charging path employs a bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter followed by a dual active bridge (DAB) converter for galvanic isolation and power transfer. The DC charging interface operates in bidirectional boost mode to manage DC power exchange. A detailed dynamic model is developed, and control strategies for both charging paths are implemented. A key improvement in this work is the replacement of the previously proposed artificial neural network (ANN) controller with a proportional–integral (PI) controller for regulating the DC-link voltage. This replacement improves the system’s transient performance by achieving a faster and more stable step response. Simulation results using MATLAB/Simulink confirm effective simultaneous charging, improved step response, low total harmonic distortion (THD) on the grid side, and near-unity power factor. The proposed system demonstrates a practical, efficient, and scalable solution for next-generation EV charging stations, especially those that aim to incorporate renewable DC sources for faster and more flexible charging.
