Abstract:

This overview delves into several of the principal existing and potential future advancements in laser medicine. Within therapeutic contexts, significant focus is directed towards achieving specificity in tissue targets and interaction mechanisms to attain distinct biological effects. This involves the precise confinement of thermal damage through pulsed laser irradiation and precision targeting utilizing exogenous photothermal or photochemical chromophores. The potential for diagnostic applications of lasers in medicine is primarily exemplified through diverse in vivo spectroscopic techniques. Both therapeutic and diagnostic applications are increasingly contingent on the evolution of comprehensive systems, wherein lasers constitute an indispensable, albeit singular, component. The realization of the complete clinical potential of novel concepts in laser medicine hinges on addressing numerous scientific and technical challenges. The impetus for such advancements will stem from integrated, multidisciplinary collaborations among medical, scientific, and industrial entities.
