Abstract:

Aluminum based metal matrix composite are used in the design of round transportation vehicles and aircraft. MMCs could be produced by variety of methods such as stir cast, Liquid Infiltration and Powder metallurgy. Among this, the powder metallurgy process is one of the most effective methods for manufacturing metal matrix composites due to its high-volume reinforcements and uniform distribution of particles. In this study, Al2219 is reinforced with TiB2 particles are fabricated by powder metallurgy process. Al 6061 alloy reinforced with the primary reinforcement of 2.5%, 5.0% & 7.5% (weight percentage) TiB2 particulates. The result revealed that TiB2 particles reinforced composites exhibited a lower wear loss compared to the unreinforced alloy. The mechanical properties such as hardness, wear resistance and compression were measured by Micro hardness tester, pin-on disc, and Optical microscope. The improved mechanical properties was achieved with 5 Wt. % reinforcement TiB2 particulates.
