Abstract:

Passive components are essential in the design and development of microchips for high-frequency applications. Inductor is the key component in the design of Radio Frequency (RF) circuits like Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO),RF filters, Phased Locked Loop (PLL) etc. Performance of on-chip single layer inductors in RF circuits is low, because of ohmic losses and eddy current losses. This paper presents design and performance of on-chip multi-layer inductor. And also, effect of space between the turns on performance of multi- layer inductor is presented. For the same specifications, when compared to conventional single layer inductor, multi-layer inductor shows an improvement of 212% in terms of terms of Q-factor and 961% in terms of inductance.
