Abstract:

Er3+ doped Y2O3 nanoparticles for up conversion bioimaging have been prepared by enzymatic decomposition of urea. Resultant particle size is about several tens nm with narrow size distribution whereas the particle size was smaller than those acquired by homogeneous and alkali precipitation methods. Further, we developed a novel ball milling technique for the effective dispersion of Y2O3 nanoparticles in an aqueous solution using yttria stabilized zirconia balls (YSZ) and polyacrylic acid sodium salt (PAANa) as an effective dispersant. Results showed that solution pH plays a foremost role in the nanoparticles dispersion. It was observed that the presence of Na+ ions present in PAANa, act as an ionic cross linker in an aqueous medium leads to the formation of bidentate metal complex structures between Y2O3 surface and carboxylate functional groups of PAANa. Further it consequently enhances the dispersion of nanoparticles in an alkaline pH. Furthermore, some of the experimental parameters such as size and quantity of zirconia balls, volume of water, quantity of PAANa and Y2O3 nanoparticles were optimized in order to get uniform size nanoparticles during the milling process. The resultant particles have size in 20-30 nm showed bright green up conversion emission under a 980 nm laser diode excitation
